What are RoHS and WEEE Directives?

On 13 Feb, 2003, European Union Officially issued Directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (simplified as RoHS) and Directive 2002/95/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment (simplified as WEEE). The EU directives RoHS and WEEE will soon be implemented. New electrical and electronic equipment put on the market from 1 July 2006 shall not contain lead(Pb), mercury(Hg), cadmium(Cd), hexavalent chromium(Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls(PBBs) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs). From 13 Aug 2005 electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer shall bear the responsibilities of prevention, reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery of such waste so as to reduce the disposal of waste.
